The Washington National Opera, a 54-year-old theatrical institution, has proven once again why they’re at the top of American Rights at Work’s 2008 Labor Day List. The theater’s workers, who belong to the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA), and the Opera’s management hammered out a new contract together in less than 48 hours! The new agreement provides singers, dancers, stage managers, and principal artists at the Washington National Opera with a modest increases in wages and benefits over the next three years.
The union and the Washington National Opera’s management haven’t always been making beautiful music together. In the early 90s, the artists even went on strike two times. But the past few years have strengthened the relationship between the workers and employers, now everyone is working together amazingly.
“We have a great relationship with our employers,” says Eleni Kallas, National Director of Organizing and Training at AGMA. “Together, AGMA and the Washington Opera brainstorm to fix problems as they arise.”
