For the third consecutive Labor Day, American Rights at Work organized the #unionmember Tweet-a-Thon – connecting actors, athletes, writers, entertainers, rank-and-file union members, and workers’ rights supporters nationwide to share the value of unions and what it means to be a #unionmember through Twitter. We were proud to once again partner with Actors’ Equity, MLB Players Association, NFL Players Association, SAG-AFTRA, and the Writers Guild of America, East, to take over Labor Day on Twitter.

By the end of the holiday weekend, 11.7 million people saw tweets about the advantages of being a #unionmember on the field, the set, and the factory floor. Union members and their supporters collectively sent over 11,000 tweets to celebrate the role unions play in our workplaces and economy, creating an incredible 43.8 million impressions.

Tweet-a-Thon participants included “Happy Days” legend Henry Winkler (@hwinkler4real), Daily Show co-creater Lizz Winstead (@LizzWinstead), screenwriter Delia Ephron (@deliaephron), “Anchorman” and “The Candidate” screenwriter Adam McKay (@GhostPanther), Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett (@ChrisShiflett71), “Conan” sidekick Andy Richter (@Andy_Richter), and “Office” stars Kate Flannery (@KateFlannery) and Angela Kinsey (@AngelaKinsey).

Football players standing up for unions included Brian Cushing (@briancushing56) of the Houston Texans and Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould (@RobbieGould09). MLB players like Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria (@Evan3Longoria) and Detroit ace Justin Verlander (@JustinVerlander) took time off the diamond to share their #unionmember pride. Justin even held a Twitter-chat as part of the festivities!
