Unfortunately, the current committee chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), has been overlooking real issues of concern to America’s taxpayers and workers in favor of witch hunts to please corporate donors and extremist allies. Is Issa answering to business interests or everyday citizens? Find out what Issa’s really been up to as “Oversight” chairman below. (Or download the PDF.)

Overreach Chairman

Interferes in ongoing legal case, threatening due process

Threatened due process by launching an unprecedented probe into an open NLRB complaint issued against the Boeing Corporation by holding hearings and issuing subpoenas for sensitive documents.

Pushes anti-worker agenda

Invited Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker to testify at an Oversight hearing about state budget issues in an attempt to justify Walker’s repeal of collective bargaining rights as financially motivated. Ironically, Walker was forced to admit under oath that his attacks on collective bargaining would not save taxpayers money.

Manufactures crisis about union political activity

Federal labor law already protects workers who do not want their money going toward their unions’ political efforts. Yet Chairman Issa held a hearing, launched a website, and sent threatening letters to unions about a problem that doesn’t exist: forced worker participation in the political process through their unions.

Pursued unwarranted witch hunt against federal employees

Over the past year, Issa launched 11 investigations and made at least 46 document requests based on allegations of criminal misconduct at the DOE with little to no supporting evidence. All claims have turned out to be inaccurate.

Overlook Chairman

Ignores NLRB’s watchdog report on serious ethics breaches

Refused to hold a hearing on GOP NLRB member Flynn after an NLRB Inspector General report shows he compromised the board’s decision-making process by passing along sensitive, confidential information to corporate attorneys who conduct business before the NLRB, including a former senior adviser to Mitt Romney.

Refuses to investigate Walmart’s efforts to weaken anti-bribery laws

Issa won’t look into apparent efforts by Walmart to lobby against an important anti-corruption law at the very same time company executives were said to have violated it in Mexican business dealings.

Turns a blind eye to dubious pharmaceutical company practices

Has chosen not to investigate pharmaceutical companies that buy up essential medicines in short supply and transfer them to subsidiaries, that in turn sell the drugs at a high cost on the “Gray Market,” potentially a legal violation.

Prioritizing the 1% over the 99%

To date, Rep. Issa has refused to hold a hearing on skyrocketing CEO pay or Wall Street’s role in the economic downturn. Issa instead investigated the SEC for its investigation of Goldman Sachs for fraud, while he purchased Goldman Sachs bonds during this time period.

Everyone knows being a mom is hard work, and balancing the demands of a career and the demands of a family can be even harder. But unions have made contributions that help moms both on and off the job.

Striking a work/family balance can be a challenge for all workers, including moms. Union members earn 14 percent more paid time off than non-union members – time moms can spend with their families.

Earning wages to support themselves and their family matters to mothers. Union women make 33 percent more than their non-union counterparts. That’s 33 percent more to put toward meals, family vacations, and school supplies!

Fighting for working mothers in the halls of power, which haven’t been kind to women, is a priority for unions. Unions don’t just represent the interests of their members when it comes to public policy, they represent all of the 99% – and that includes moms. Unions have played an instrumental role in supporting important legislation for women such as the 2009 Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and paid sick days across the country.

This Mother’s Day, be sure to share your appreciation with all of the amazing mothers you know. And when you’re celebrating, tell a friend or relative about the important work unions do to support moms throughout the year.

P.S. I love you, Mom!

We know it’s almost impossible to find a gift that repays your mom for all her love, hard work, and dedication. But you can show her how much she means to you by getting a gift that’s fun, practical, and supports good, union jobs.

Check out these Mother’s Day gift ideas from our Union Shop. Is your mom into cooking? Check out these great products from All-Clad and Pyrex and add to her kitchen arsenal. Want to send up a toast to the best mom in the world? (Ed.’s note: Assume this is your own mom!) Fill up Libbey stemware with wine from union-grown grapes. You can pair that wine with a dessert of Ghirardelli chocolate, made by union members in San Francisco.

For the Mom who is less of a foodie and more of a bookworm, Union Shop has you covered! Give her a gift card from Powell’s Books – the largest union online book retailer. And if she’s more of a periodical reader, give the gift of a Consumer Reports subscription and support union journalism.

At the end of the day, you can’t go wrong with a card that tells your mom how much she means to you. Luckily American Greetings has just the right words and they’re brought to you by union members!

No matter the gift, though, we hope all moms enjoy their special day this weekend!

This Saturday is Workers Memorial Day, a time when working families across the country gather to remember the dead and fight for the living — as Mother Jones put it. Though we’ve made significant strides in workplace safety over the years, it’s clear that we’ve still got some work to do.

According to the AFL-CIO’s annual death on the job report, 4,547 workers died on the job in 2010 and 3.1 million were injured. That’s in addition to the thousands who died as a result of occupational diseases. But rather than ensure safer workplaces for employees, right-wing legislators have spent the past year pushing so-called right to work legislation.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rate of workplace deaths is 52.9 percent higher in right-to-work states. And for workers who get sick or injured on the job, the rate of employer-sponsored health insurance in right-to-work states is 2.6 percentage points lower than in states without these restrictions.

So this Saturday, let’s honor workers by renewing our commitment to stopping right to work in its tracks. For more information on right to work and to add your name to our nationwide petition opposing this dangerous initiative, visit wrongforeveryone.org.

In response, Station launched a vicious anti-union campaign, firing organizers and retaliating, threatening, interrogating, and spying on other employees.

How bad have the attacks been? Two NLRB Administrative Law Judges found that Station Casinos broke federal labor law 88 times. That’s the largest number of unfair labor practices committed by a single employer in the history of Nevada gaming! (The company has of course appealed the judges’ recommended decisions.)

With Station playing so dirty, the deck is stacked against these workers. They clearly deserve a fair process to allow them to decide whether to have union representation without facing any interference, intimidation, or bullying from management.

Instead of investing in its workers, respecting their rights, and abiding by the law, Station wants to cover up its shameful workers’ rights abuses. The company just launched a spin campaign – spending millions of dollars to win over public opinion through TV and newspaper ads, mailers, and billboards in Las Vegas. We need you to speak up and convince Station the ads aren’t working and we know better!

The timing couldn’t be more urgent. For the past week, Station workers, faith leaders, and community allies have been fasting to bring more attention to their plight. Last Thursday, a casino spokesperson called the fast “disingenuous” and a publicity stunt. This is a big sacrifice these brave workers are making to send a message to Station Casinos that they should have a right to work without fear. It’s crucial we convince the company that we believe in these workers, that we’re watching, and that we care.

Fortunately there is something you can do to let Station Casinos know that we want it to respect its workers. Click here and directly tell Station to let its workers have a fair process to form a union!
