Reports to: Director of Partnerships

Starting Salary Range: $60,000 – $70,000

Status: Full-time, One Year, Exempt, Unit Position

Location: Washington, DC

POSITION OVERVIEW:

American Rights at Work, a labor education and advocacy organization, is seeking a one year, full-time campaign opposition researcher. This person will be responsible for researching, analyzing, and packaging information about individuals and entities opposed to the interests of working families. This person will also be responsible for developing and executing a strategic plan based on analysis of information gathered and consideration of other organizational priorities.

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Developing overall opposition strategy and integrating it with other organizational priorities.
  • Monitoring the news about and activity of anti-labor individuals and entities.
  • Compiling, researching/analyzing, summarizing, packaging and distributing data.
  • Collaborating with other progressive watchdog groups.
  • Preparing briefing materials, fact sheets, collateral materials, and periodic bulletins.
  • Providing research support on deadline for breaking news stories and assist with drafting talking points, press releases, blog updates/blogger outreach.
  • Responding to and disseminating information to key constituencies in a timely, effective manner.
  • Contributing to the overall goals of the Outreach Department.
  • Contributing to projects and tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5-7 years of corporate or government research experience and writing/investigative journalism experience for a public interest organization, campaign, or publication
  • Demonstrated political judgment and advocacy skills.
  • Strong strategic campaign experience.
  • Ability to develop “big picture” strategy while keeping track of details.
  • Ability to write in a clear, concise, and interesting style devoid of jargon or academic language.
  • Breadth of knowledge about and awareness of current political and policy issues and an understanding of conservative misinformation about unions.
  • Be flexible, adaptive to frequent changes in workload, willing to work well under tight deadlines and long and irregular hours when needed to meet campaign demands.
  • Initiative, reliability, and the ability to work well in teams in a collegial atmosphere are a must.
  • Proven ability to plan and lead complex projects through to completion.
  • Ability to liaise/interface between multiple internal and external constituencies at all levels.
  • Experience with union organizing or collective bargaining campaigns is a plus.
  • Strong commitment to progressive social change and workers’ rights issues.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, databases, spreadsheets, and variety of online research tools.
  • HTML/online writing skills, working knowledge of and facility with traditional and new media strategies a plus.
