Today only: Buy a book, help a worker!

Powell's BooksHere in the American Rights at Work office, three things get us going: coffee, helping workers, and a great book. While you’ll have to find your own caffeine fix, we’ve found a way to buy books at an affordable price and help workers out at the same time!

Portland-based Powell’s Books is one of the largest independent, unionized bookstores in the country. While this purveyor of new, used, and out-of-print books enjoys a great deal of popularity amongst avid book readers and serves as a destination for many book store fans, it’s not immune to economic realities. Powell’s recently laid off ten percent of its staff in response to a significant decline in sales.

Fortunately, these staff members – members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) – do not have to face the prospects of layoff alone. Their coworkers have found a way for people across the country to help support them, while also showing that the public care about places like Powell’s where good jobs exist.

Here’s how it works: for today only, 7.5% of each sale at Powell’s Books online store will directly benefit the bookstore’s staff members recently displaced by layoffs. You get a book or two, workers get some assistance. That’s a win-win in our book!

So order a favorite classic or pickup a new bestseller, either way you’ll be sustaining the future of a great local bookstore and its hardworking staff. You don’t have to read between the lines to know that this is a great deal- for our economy and our workers.
