From helmets to hardhats, helping our vets succeed

The men and women who serve in our armed forces truly are heroes in every sense of the word—they exercise great courage by putting their lives on the line to protect our country and the freedoms we so often take for granted.

However, when these veterans return from their service many face poor job prospects and the threat of unemployment. In fact, according to The Washington Post, the unemployment rate among veterans who have left active duty since 2001 has steadily climbed from 9.5 percent in August to 12.1 percent in October, more than three percentage points above the civilian unemployment rate.

And that’s where Helmets to Hardhats comes in. Helmets to Hardhats is a program that assists veterans in their transition from the military into the civilian workforce by connecting them to quality career and training opportunities in one of America’s most challenging and rewarding industries: the construction industry.  Many companies in the industry, like Thompson Electric, a leading provider of electrical services in Ohio, use the Helmets to Hardhats program to recruit and train highly capable workers.

Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) are another tool that facilitate veterans’ transition into the civilian workforce. PLAs are simply agreements that make sure the jobs created on a project are good, safe jobs. Increasingly, PLAs are implementing community workforce agreements (CWAs) to ensure that local residents – particularly women, people of color, and military veterans – have a path to a brighter economic future. A recent study from Cornell University found that 139 of the 185 PLAs analyzed for the report included Helmet to Hardhats provisions to promote the entry of veterans into the construction industry. These PLAs provide veterans with good, family-sustaining jobs when they return from service.

As you celebrate Veterans Day, remember to honor those heroes who are willing to risk their lives so that you can live yours. One great way to honor them is to support programs like Helmets to Hardhats that seek to provide our returning heroes with a brighter economic future.

    I worked with Helmets to Hardhats a couple years ago to produce a manual on PTSD and TBI. They perform an incredible service to our vets by finding them work in the unionized trades. America needs to understand that unions help our vets transition into well-paying union jobs when they return home. Republicans efforts to demonize and break unions are only harming our vets. This message needs to get out there.

    I just want to share this that will surely help for our unemployed vets:


    They will hire vets to install low flush toilets. A Vet can have a well paying job and 9000 gallons per year will be saved! They can hire wounded worriors too.
