American Rights at Work, representing a broad coalition of labor and workers’ rights advocates, will launch the first issue advertising campaign for the 111th Congress on Sunday, November 16. The nationwide television ad campaign, aimed at building support for the Employee Free Choice Act, serves as a reminder that in our current economic climate, the American public is hungry for measures to strengthen the middle class.

The ad is available here: www.AmericanRightsatWork.org.

As workers’ paychecks shrink and healthcare costs skyrocket out of control, America’s working families are paying the biggest price in our struggling economy. The Employee Free Choice Act will help level the playing field for America’s workers by giving them a fair and direct path to form unions. It will also help employees secure a contract in a reasonable period of time and toughen penalties against employers who violate the law.

If a majority of workers want a union, they should get one – it’s that simple,” said American Rights at Work Chair David Bonior. “The reality is they can’t. That’s why Americans are calling resoundingly for new economic policies that restore the middle class and rebuild our economy so that it works for everyone again, not just CEOs and corporate special interests.”

The Employee Free Choice Act is an overwhelmingly popular piece of bipartisan legislation. In a poll conducted of voters last week by Peter D. Hart Research Associates, 60 percent of voters believe that in these tough economic times, it is important to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, and nearly one-third (31 percent) strongly believe it should be a priority for Congress. President-elect Obama and Vice-President-elect Biden are cosponsors of the bill and majority of the incoming Congress also solidly backs the measure.

“Our new policymakers know this is a critical vehicle in the economic recovery for Main Street. We need the Employee Free Choice Act to restore the balance, giving men and women the freedom to form unions and get better health care, job security, and benefits – and an opportunity to pursue their dreams,” Bonior concluded.
