Washington, D.C. – Tonight, American Rights at Work issued the statement of Executive Director Kimberly Freeman Brown in response to presidential candidate Newt Gingrich’s call to defund the National Labor Relations Board during the Republican presidential debate in St. Anselm.

Said Freeman Brown:

“When Newt Gingrich—or any other politician—chooses to demonize the National Labor Relations Board, he’s merely furthering the vicious and politically motivated attacks on workers we’ve seen across the country this year. No matter whether you’re a teacher, firefighter, or nurse’s aide, right-wing legislators in Congress and corporate lobbyists have made it clear that their ultimate aim is to take away workers’ rights on the job.

“The duty of the NLRB, by enforcing the National Labor Relations Act, is to ensure that workers can choose to form a union. That’s not a partisan mission, but one that has been endorsed by Presidents and members of Congress on both sides of the aisle since its inception. Yet the current line-up of GOP members and presidential hopefuls –along with their big corporate backers–has vocally opposed allowing workers their right to a voice on the job, time and again threatening to defund and dismantle one of the few remaining protections for ordinary Americans.”
