Ten Employers Top 2008 Labor Day List
Corporations Honored for Conducting Business Through Strong Partnerships with Employees

Washington, DC – As the American Dream is drifting further out of reach for most workers, a number of employees and employers are finding ways to work together through innovative labor relations models that aim to curb this growing trend. In observance of Labor Day, the American Rights at Work Education Fund publicizes successful union and management partnerships in its fourth annual Labor Day List: Partnerships that Work.

By fairly compensating employees and sharing decision-making responsibility with them through unions, the diverse employers featured in this year’s list prove that embracing such a forward-thinking business model is a smart, ethical, and successful strategy.

“While job outsourcing, corporate bankruptcies, layoffs, and unfair negotiations are rampant, this year’s Labor Day List employers and their employees’ unions tell another story. They are proving that tumultuous labor relations are a thing of the past, not the future,” says Mary Beth Maxwell, Executive Director of the American Rights at Work Education Fund. “These companies buck the trend and showcase the strength that comes when workers and management create long-lasting productive partnerships. Economic success does not have to come at the expense of workers’ rights.”

At a time when manufacturing jobs are leaving the United States in record numbers, one of this year’s honorees, Gamesa USA, opened up domestic operations in Pennsylvania, helping sustain the state’s manufacturing tradition by building wind turbines. In doing so, Gamesa is providing good, green-collar jobs of the future, expanding domestic renewable energy capacity, and respecting its employees’ choice to organize a union at their new workplace.

The diversity of this year’s honorees is also evident in Alabama Power, a utility serving millions of residents in the South. The utility’s longstanding collaboration with its workers’ union has resulted in one of the lowest turnover rates in the industry, and exemplary on-the-job safety accomplishments. Other featured Labor Day List employers offer inspiring turnaround stories of how workers and management have worked jointly to improve relations and ultimately the services they provide. In our nation’s capital, artists, their unions, and management at the Washington National Opera now achieve harmony on and off stage by improving working conditions after overcoming an era of unproductive conflict.

Other employers being honored include A. Zahner Company (Kansas City, MO), Delta Construction Corporation (Kapolei, HI), DMAX-LTD. (Moraine, OH), Justice Clothing (Bangor, ME), Maimonides Medical Center (Brooklyn, NY), the State of Kansas (Topeka, KS), and Team Industries (Kaukauna, WI).
