Flash mob “rah rah’s” for hotel workers (Video)

In my many years scouring the Internet, I don’t think I’ve ever seen “hotel workers,” “flash mob,” and “Lady Gaga” in the same sentence.

But here it is: this week, the San Francisco chapter of Pride at Work organized a Lady Gaga flash mob to support hotel workers at the Westin Saint Francis Hotel. Think I’m kidding? Check the tape.

Singing “Boycott, boycott, workers’ rights are hot” to the tune of Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and showing off coordinated dance moves in the middle of the lobby, the flash mobbers were impossible for the Westin’s management – or patrons – to ignore.

Pink hearts and Megan Fox

pink heartThousands of teachers and other education professionals are wearing pink hearts to school today.  Why?  Because with schools across the country facing budget cuts, an estimated 300,000 educators may receive a pink slip by the end of this school year.  The American Federation of Teachers’ “Pink Hearts, Not Pink Slips” campaign is drawing attention to the impact on students, schools and communities when drastic budget cuts result in layoffs.

One PTA in Los Angeles enlisted actress Megan Fox to create a funny—and pointed—video dramatizing the effects of budget cuts on California schools. Check it out:

Video: What really goes on in union organizing campaigns

Were you ever bullied at school? Ever get your lunch money stolen? I bet you thought that behavior would stop once you grew up.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case when you’re a worker trying to form a union. Here’s a statistic that’ll get your blood boiling: 78 percent of workers are forced to attend closed-door meetings with management during union organizing drives. And how much can employers be fined by the National Labor Relations Board for illegally threatening, intimidating, or firing their workers? A whopping zero dollars and zero cents.
